Cookies store a piece of information from the website locally on your computer. This is how the website keeps track of who you are while you are navigating around the pages. I also use cookies on this site to keep track of which discussion messages you have read so I can show an "UPDATED" message next to the parts you havn't read. Both Internet Explorer and Netscape let you specify how to handle cookies. I believe they are set to allow them by default. You need to turn them on if they are off. Here's how: Netscape 4.0 1. From the Edit menu, click Preferences 2. In the Catagories box, click Advanced. 3. If under Cookies it says "Disable Cookies", your cookies were turned off. Select either "Accept All Cookies" or "Accept only cookies that get sent back to the orignating server". They'll both work, and the second one is a bit more secure. 4. If you wish, click "Warn me before accepting a cookie". I urge against this since you'll run into an annoying "Accept Cookie" window a lot while browsing the site. 5. Click Ok. Internet Explorer 5.0 & Up (and maybe 4.0, someone want to verify this?) 1. From the Tools menu, click Internet Options... 2. Click on the Tab that says "Security" 3. Make sure that the globe icon that says "Internet" is selected 4. Click "Custom Level" 5. Scroll down the settings list until you get to Cookies. Set all the options under Cookies to "Enable" or "Prompt" (Although with prompt you'll get a lot of annoying popup windows) 6. Press Ok on both dialog boxes. And that's it. You should be able to create a user and browse the site. Right now this is the only way to view the site. If you absolutely cannot turn on cookies, let me know. I've been thinking about making the page non-cookie dependent, but I'd rather make other things a priority. |
